FAQs

What is Rent.com.au Contents Insurance and what does it cover?

Rent.com.au Contents Insurance is contents insurance for renters. Our policy is designed to cover your insured belongings, both inside and (at your option) outside your rental property. The policy insures your furniture, electronics, and other items against loss, theft, and accidental damage.

Rent.com.au Contents Insurance also covers your insured items against loss, damage or destruction while moving between rental properties, and if you need to vacate your property because it is un-inhabitable (for example, after a break-in) the policy will pay for reasonable alternative accommodation up to the specified amount for up to 30 days.

Rent.com.au Contents Insurance doesn't require you to get a quote – just pick your level of cover, set up your payment details, and you're covered. Then you can forget about it, because the policy can move with you within Australia (excluding the Northern Territory), as long as you let us know and your new home is in an area eligible for the policy.

Who can get this insurance?

Rent.com.au Contents Insurance is available renters who are 18 years of age or older, have a permanent residence in Australia, an unrestricted right of entry into Australia and fit into one of the following categories:

a) an Australian resident; or

b) on a skilled working visa (e.g. temporary skills shortage visa), but not a working holiday visa; or

c) have a partner/spouse visa which allows You to stay in Australia for at least (two) 2 years; or

d) have a New Zealand passport.

How much is Rent.com.au Contents Insurance?

Rent.com.au Contents Insurance offers three different levels of cover, starting from $9.99 per month/$119.88 per year with cover up to $10,000 (from $10.84 per month/$130.08 per year if you live in NSW).

Does each person in the household need a separate policy?

Your policy will cover you and your spouse if you have one. If you live in a share house, we recommend that your housemates consider their own insurance.

What is not covered by Rent.com.au Contents Insurance?

What plan should I select?

The level of cover you select is up to you. There are three policy options available, with cover up to $10,000, $25,000 or $50,000 respectively based on the value you wish to insure. For more information, refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

I own a pet. Will it be covered with Rent.com.au Contents Insurance?

The policy covers loss or damage to your personal items caused by a pet. However it doesn't cover the pet itself, or the health costs of your pet. For more information on the extent of this cover, refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

Will I be covered for accidental damage?

The policy includes cover for accidental damage, subject to certain terms, conditions and exclusions. For more information on the extent of this cover, refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

Will I be covered for portable items while I'm away from home?

For an additional premium, Rent.com.au Contents Insurance provides an option to add cover for your personal possessions temporarily removed from your home for 14 days or less while in Australia. When you add this option, you will be covered for your insured items when you're away from your home subject to certain limits and exclusions. For more information on the extent of this cover, refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

I'm going on holidays, will my possessions at home still be covered?

Certain cover is available while you are temporarily away from home, however this is subject to specific conditions and exclusions, in particular, when you are away from home for 60 or more consecutive days. Please read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for full terms and conditions.

How do I make a claim?

Please download and complete the claim form. Send the completed claim form along with all supporting documents to the Chubb Claims Centre at aus.propertyclaims@chubb.com. Alternatively You can contact Chubb on 1800 958 123.

Do I need to pay an excess if I make a claim?

An excess of $500 is payable per Event under each benefit of the Policy apart from ‘Benefit 3 - Temporary Accommodation' in which case a 72 hour waiting period applies. Please refer to the in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for full details.

What if I need to cover more than $50,000?

Rent.com.au Contents Insurance offers three plans with levels of cover of up to $10,000, $25,000 and $50,000. Rent.com.au Contents Insurance cannot provide cover above $50,000.

Will the policy cover a broken TV?

An item like a TV is usually covered if it was broken or damaged as a result of an accident, subject to the terms and conditions of the Policy. The policy contains sub-limits for the amount payable for any one item depending on the plan you chose. For instance, if the TV is broken due to a technical failure, then it will not be covered. Check the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for information on this.

Are there any areas in Australia that are not covered?

Yes. If you're located in the Northern Territory, then Rent.com.au Contents Insurance is not available. Otherwise cover is available in most areas of Australia – please call Chubb on 1800 958 123 to see if your area is covered.

Do any of my belongings need to be listed separately on my policy?

No, you don't need to list your items separately when setting up the policy. But if you make a claim, you will need to provide:

a) receipts for any expenses that are being claimed;

b) any reports that have been obtained from the police, a carrier or other authorities about an accident, loss or damage; and

c) any other documentary evidence required by Us under Your Policy; and

d) additional evidence that We may request to enable Us to assess Your claim.

Sub-limits per item apply depending on your level of cover

I'm moving home. What do I need to do?

It's important to let us know when you move home so we can update your policy with your new address before you move. To do this, contact Chubb directly on 1800 958 123. Cover at your new address is subject to the terms and conditions of the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and cover is not available in the Northern Territory.
