1 – Switch your utilities across

2 – Make a plan for moving day

Having a comprehensive moving plan is important. No matter whether you’re moving locally or interstate, having a strategy is key.

If you’re booking movers, start these conversations early. Find out what’s available and what times you can reserve.

If you’re moving with a family, there’ll be a lot to consider on moving day. Think about creating a run sheet to keep everyone on track. What boxes are going where? Where are the kids going to sleep that night? Having a plan in writing will help everyone involved.

3 – Don’t miss your Property Condition Report

If you’re moving into a rental, you’ll be given a copy of your Property Condition Report. This report is a detailed look at the condition of your home, any existing damage and the state/condition of any furnishings and appliances.

Complete a copy of your report before you put too much furniture into your house. It’s best that you can still see the walls and floors to get an accurate picture of the property’s condition.

The report should be supplied to you by your landlord or agent. They will likely ask you to note in the report where you agree or disagree with a line item.

You may feel like you’re pedantic, but this is the one document that could save your bond at the end of your lease, so be specific and take your own photos as a backup.

4 – Sort out your clutter

It’s easy to organise your home when you have a good game plan. Knowing where to look and what you’re looking for is a big help.

Grab a laundry basket or similarly-sized box to pick up unwanted items from your wardrobe, pantry or bathroom. If you have quality clothes you no longer need, consider donating them to charity.

Approaching clutter can feel overwhelming, but it’s easily handled if you set yourself a timer and tackle rooms 20 minutes at a time.

5 – Make a start on the big clean

There are some cleaning items that you can’t do until you’ve moved all your furniture out of the way or done a final vacuum (things like cleaning walls and floors), but there are things you can do ahead of time.

Some easy tasks you can tackle early on are dusting and washing your blinds. Does your kitchen have space above the cabinets? It’s time to get up there and check the dust damage! Don’t forget your aircon filter and fan blades.

The oven is an important item to cover before you move. Check the rangehood and give your stovetop an extensive scrub. Now’s the time to look for any built-up grease in these areas.

6 – Get packing underway

The packing component of your move should start about 2-3 weeks out. Gather packing materials like boxes, packing tape, labels and bubble wrap for your move.

While the process can seem daunting, the best thing to do is start with items you know you won’t need urgently. Consider packing the contents of your garage or seasonal items and work up from there.

Safe and secure packing is time-consuming, so allocate longer than you expect. When you’re about a week out from your move, start wrapping up what you’re doing and check that your belongings are well-protected.

7 – Keep your important items aside

The last thing you want is to arrive at your new rental without easy access to chargers, tools or important items you might need the next morning.

Keep a box aside for handy items (screwdrivers, light bulbs, nails, Allen keys, etc.) for the move, as well as bed linen and sheets to use on the first night.

It’s worth creating a list of other items you might need on arrival. Consider adding cups, plates, work clothes, coffee and pet food – whatever works best for you.

8 – Don’t forget to redirect your mail

One final item that often gets left off the list is changing your address. If you still get your bills delivered, or have subscriptions dropped off every few months, now’s the time to update your details with companies who need it most.

Make a list of who you need to contact, and check if they offer a paperless bill option. Have your accounts sent to your email instead, and save yourself a trip to the letterbox.
