Here's where to find your Australian driver's licence and card numbers.

Have you been asked to provide your driver’s licence or card number for identification purposes? Here’s how to find it.

What is my driver’s licence number?

Your Australian driver’s licence number is a 10 to 11-digit unique number. A licence is required across Australia before you are permitted to drive a motor vehicle on the road.

Every state and territory government has its own licensing scheme, so the rules around issuing driver’s licences vary by jurisdiction.

That being said, licenses are generally recognised and are valid between other states and territories.

How is an Australian driver’s licence used for ID?

An Australian driver’s licence has become the de facto photo ID that’s used in everyday situations. This is because Australia does not have a national identity card.

Today, licences and photo cards are hologrammed and contain a photograph, signature, the holder’s address, date of birth and a licence number.

Whether you’re setting up your Renter Resume on Rent.com.au or looking to verify your identity, you may use your licence as one of your Australian ID documents. Your passport, birth certificate and Medicare card are other common forms of identification.

    • James, worth contacting the licensing authority of the state/territory where your licence was issued. You should report the loss and explain your need for the licence number & details.
