Whether
you plan on living alone or with flatmates, be
prepared-your first apartment will most likely be a
small one or smaller than what you have been used to
living in at home! That's why it pays to plan ahead.
Figure out in advance which things you just can't do
without.
Furniture
Face the facts your first apartment is unlikely to be featured in the latest fashion magazines or high profile property reviews! So think bare essentials. A good comfortable chair, perhaps a couch or beanbag, a small sturdy desk for homework or a computer, a dresser, a bed of course or perhaps a futon. Baskets and trunks are good for decoration and to store extras.
Second hand fridges are a good option.
Buy inexpensive furniture and accessories until you know what you really want. Consider flea markets, classifieds, and discount stores. When you know where you want to live longer term and possibly ready to buy a property, then start thinking about expensive and unique items of household furniture.
In the meantime, you can enjoy excellent quality furniture and furnishings by renting them on short term leases.
Cookware
Yes, you're going to have to eat in too. Maybe even learn how to cook. But first, get the basicspots, pans, dinner setting for at least four, cutlery, glasses, coffee/tea mugs, a teapot, perhaps even a microwave. And we're not talking sterling silver or fine china here, inexpensive cookware is just fine to start out with.
Go to an IKEA store or similar for a good range of inexpensive house set-up ideas.
Decorating
Think plants and posters, colourful rugs and wall coverings. Also consider second hand shops, flea markets and garage sales for those inexpensive funky items that'll add character to your place.
